VPS and web hosting

VPS or web hosting: what your website needs

For a website you have two routes: web hosting, where we run the server and you work from a panel, or a VPS, where the server is yours. For a company site, a blog or a small shop, web hosting is enough and simpler. Below is how to tell which one you need.

Web hosting, in short

Web hosting is an account on a server we manage, with Plesk. From the panel you work with files, databases, mail, SSL and cron jobs, while the operating system, updates and server security are not your concern. At NeoHost it runs in Bucharest, on NVMe, from €2.90 a month, with the Plesk license included.

  • Startup: 1 domain, 15 GB NVMe, 5 mailboxes, €2.90 a month.
  • Business: 3 domains, 20 GB NVMe, 10 mailboxes, €4.90 a month.
  • Enterprise: 5 domains, 35 GB NVMe, 15 mailboxes, €7.90 a month.

A VPS, in short

A VPS is a virtual server with root access: you choose the operating system and install what you want on it. You get more freedom and more responsibility, because updates, security and backups are up to you. The VPS families start from €3 a month.

When web hosting is enough

  • A company site, a blog or a portfolio.
  • A WordPress site: Plesk comes with WordPress Toolkit, where you install it and manage its updates.
  • A small online shop, on WordPress or another PHP platform.
  • Mail on your own domain, with webmail and a spam filter.
  • Several small sites in the same account, each on its own PHP version.

When you need a VPS

  • You need root: a system package, a specific PHP extension or a server setting the panel does not allow.
  • You run a service of your own on a port you choose: an API in Node.js or Python, a bot, an app with WebSockets.
  • You have a worker or a job queue that has to run around the clock.
  • You want Docker or several separate apps on the same machine.
  • You need Windows Server.

If you need a VPS, also read LXC or KVM to choose the right family.

How to move from one to the other

On web hosting, you move to a bigger package from the panel, with no downtime: the sites and mailboxes stay where they are. If you come from another provider, we move the sites, databases and mail for free, and the old site stays online until you change the DNS.

From web hosting to a VPS, you move the files and databases to the new server and change the DNS at the end. If you have a VPS, you can also get the neo_FREE web hosting package for free, on request.
